The conventional wisdom is that improving economic status will lower fertility rates. This is clear evidence the more you repeat something – true or not – the more true it seems. Population Media Center‘s Bill Ryerson offers surprising evidence that reducing fertility rates lead to improved economic status, rather than the other way around. Certainly both are worthy goals, but this evidence leads to the recognition we can’t just focus on economic opportunity and hope for the best when it comes to fertility.
